SNAP day care for kids of homeless families
Each quarter, “Helping Hands” focuses on a different topic, with weekly stories on specific programs. This quarter, we’re looking at assistance for those struggling to keep a roof over their head.
Name of the program: Spokane Neighborhood Action Program homeless day care.
What it does: Provides 30 days of day care with a maximum of 90 days for homeless families who are not eligible for Department of Social and Health Service day care. City or county residents are eligible. It also provides the parent or guardian a chance to look for permanent housing, employment or attend appointments. Clients must choose day cares that have to be licensed through DSHS.
More than 300 families were helped last year. Agencies used range from Express-school programs to mom and pop centers.
Typical client: A single mother with two kids trying to find housing and attend social service meetings.
“I probably help eight to 10 families a month on an average. One family used the day care to attend several social service appointments that addressed a severe domestic violence situation. She is now working full time and has permanent housing,” said Bob Peeler, senior family development specialist.
How to get help: Call SNAP’s east office at 456-7106 to make an appointment. For more information, go to www.snapwa.org.
How to help: Support state legislation for day-care services. Volunteer at day cares and other youth programs.
