Girl Scouts to be honored for book-collecting project

Treva Lind Correspondent

FOUR SPOKANE Valley students will soon get recognized for their work collecting nearly 1,000 books for other youth.

The collection was organized by Girl Scouts Amanda Matte, Jolisa Rosa and Mary and Molly Wakeling this past fall. They raised awareness about book donations at North Pines Middle School and gathered the materials from students and staff.

The books and a bookcase were then donated by the Girl Scouts in late October to Boys and Girls Club of Spokane to encourage reading. The four girls will be recognized at a Feb. 27 ceremony for earning their Girl Scout Silver Award.

“The girls set it all up with the school, made up posters and fliers, sorted and loaded the books for delivery,” said Jill Wakeling, mother of Mary and Molly and Troop 296 leader. “They even built a bookcase.

“I am so proud of these girls and am so excited to see how they have grown into caring, responsible young women, thanks to the opportunities given them through the Girl Scout program.”

The ceremony will recognize the girls, troop members and parents.

Amanda Matte is a student at University High School and is the daughter of Bret and Rhonda Miller. Molly Wakeling is also a student at University High School and is the daughter of Erik and Jill Wakeling. Her sister Mary is a student at North Pines Middle School. Jolisa Rosa is a student at North Pines Middle School and is the daughter of Joe and Dawn Rosa.
