The following nonprofit organizations need volunteer help. If you’re interested, please contact them directly:

Law enforcement agencies

Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office: Volunteers are needed to assist the Sheriff’s Office in three areas:

•Search and rescue: There are two units working out of Shoshone County. One encompasses the northern part, and the other includes the southern part, plus some of Benewah County. The Sheriff’s Office especially needs people who are capable of hiking for long distances in rough terrain.

•Posse: Volunteers will work with deputies as needed.

•Citizens on patrol: Volunteers will work on general patrol and will gradually expand to checking on shut-ins and others who need special help. Training required. Call Mitch Alexander, (208) 556-1114.

Post Falls Police Department: The department is recruiting new volunteers under its VIPS program, Volunteers in Police Service. Volunteers may receive training in crime prevention, patrol procedures, radio communications, report writing, etc. Volunteers must work at least 16 hours a month. If you think you might be interested, you can hear details at an introductory meeting at the department Monday, 1-3 p.m. or 7-9 p.m., 1717 E. Polston Ave., Post Falls. Coeur d’Alene Police Department: The department needs volunteers to help in the office, including data entry and general recordkeeping. Minimum of 16 hours a month. Call Wally, 666-5732.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department: The department is setting up a volunteer program and needs a volunteer coordinator to set up the system (take applications, find volunteers, research tasks, find a space, etc.). They will need volunteers in various areas of interest. Send an application, résumè, or letter of interest and list of skills to Carole Smith, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Dept., 5500 N. Museum

Museum of North Idaho: Volunteers are needed to work at the museum store in greetings and sales, Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., six-hour shifts. In addition, volunteers may work on special projects, as needed. The museum board also needs three volunteers to attend and participate in board of trustees meetings. Women’s Center

The Women’s Center Inc.: The Women’s Center in Coeur d’Alene has openings for volunteers who want to receive CIT training so they can work directly with clients; training will start in the spring. Also needed are repair and maintenance volunteers whose names can be put on a database for a one-time-only call as needed. Volunteers with various skills and interests are also needed to offer their services. Primary needs involve special long-term programs such as prevention projects, training programs in specific areas like dating violence, etc. Call Linda at 664-9303.

Memory Walk

Alzheimer’s Memory Walk: Annual event seeks to fill volunteer chairman position. The fund-raiser takes place in September; P.J. Christo, 666-2996.
