UCLA surprises No. 11 Stanford
Noelle Quinn scored a season-high 25 points and Nikki Blue tied her season best with 24 points to lead UCLA to a 90-80 upset over No. 11 Stanford on Friday night in Los Angeles.
Lisa Willis added 16 points for the Bruins (11-8, 6-4 Pacific-10 Conference), who broke a 14-game losing streak to Stanford dating back to 2000.
Brooke Smith had career highs of 26 points and 17 rebounds for the Cardinal (13-5, 8-2), whose seven-game winning streak ended.
Stanford’s Candice Wiggins, the nation’s fourth-leading scorer at 21.2 points, had 21 points in the second half to finish with 26.
Quinn scored 14 points and Blue had 11 points in the first 15 minutes, as UCLA built a 38-23 lead with 4:41 left in the first half.
(3) North Carolina 91, Wake Forest 57: Christina DeWitt scored a career-high 22 points to help the Tar Heels defeat the Demon Deacons at Winston-Salem, N.C. Camille Little added 17 points for the Tar Heels (19-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who are off to the best start in school history while tuning up to face No. 2 Duke (20-0, 7-0). Liz Strunk scored 14 points and Deirdre Naughton added 12 for the Demon Deacons (10-8, 2-4).
Saint Joseph’s 65, (17) Temple 64: Hillary Klimowicz made a layup with 3.2 seconds remaining to lift the Hawks over the Owls at Philadelphia. Whitney Ffrench scored 16 of her career-high 18 points in the second half for the Hawks (13-6, 5-3 Atlantic 10). Candice Dupree scored 20 points for Temple (14-5, 5-2).
California 72, (23) USC 67: At Los Angeles, Alexis Gray-Lawson scored 19 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Golden Bears (14-6, 6-4 Pac-10) past the Women of Troy (13-6, 7-3).
