State Highway 291 repaired, reopens
State Highway 291 in Stevens County was reopened late Monday afternoon near Sunset Bay after being closed more than two weeks.
Construction crews had spent the past 10 days replacing two culverts washed out in a Jan. 14 storm with a larger culvert.
The closure cut the highway between Willow Bay and Tum Tum, forcing drivers to take a lengthy detour on the other side of the Spokane River.
Some work remains, including installation of a guardrail. The road also will be repaved later this year.
Habitat receives funds for triplex
Three Spokane families will get homes they can afford, thanks to money from a church-based finance group and the work of volunteers.
The Spokane chapter of Habitat for Humanity announced Monday it is receiving $165,000 from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, a nonprofit organization. That money, along with $23,580 pledged by local Lutheran congregations and $47,160 from Habitat, will be used this year to build a triplex in the 5400 block of East Union Avenue near Felts Field.
Habitat homes are built with volunteer labor. Families who receive Habitat homes help with construction, then are given low-interest loans to make the purchase.
No one injured in drive-by shooting
A fight among teens apparently led to a drive-by shooting Sunday night in east central Spokane.
No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting, Spokane police spokesman Lt. Dean Sprague said.
Spokane police responded to the Underhill Park area about 6:30 p.m., Sprague said. Officers contacted several teenagers who were on foot or in vehicles and trying to leave.
No weapons were found, and no one was injured, Sprague said. According to witnesses, several rounds were fired, but no expended bullets were found.
