New home goes up in flames
Fire destroyed a nearly completed home Saturday night in a new subdivision north of Spokane, and a firefighter collapsed while battling the blaze.
About 10 p.m., neighbors called 911 when they saw flames coming from a two-story house near Hatch Road and Parker Court.
“It got pretty hot. You could feel it from here,” said Brett McMahon, who watched from a block away as 30-foot flames shot over the roof.
Three engines and four support vehicles from Spokane County Fire District 4 put out the fire, said public information officer Pat Humphries.
The firefighter who collapsed was conscious and expected to be OK, Humphries said.
The house was nearly 90 percent complete. At one point, the blaze threatened two nearby houses, and firefighters sprayed them with water as a precaution.
