Five new vehicles to be purchased

The Spokesman-Review

Following voter approval of a special three-year tax levy last fall, the Spokane Valley Fire Department is in line to purchase five new vehicles this year.

At last month’s meeting, fire commissioners accepted bids for a new pumper-ladder truck and two brush fire trucks.

Later this year, the board also is prepared to purchase two more pumper-ladders from the same company by the end of the year, said Fire Commissioner Joe Dawson.

“They’ve got to be built from scratch,” he said, and the highly customized vehicles won’t be delivered until 2007.

Some of the new equipment will replace aging engines, one of which will go to Spokane Community College for training purposes, he said.

City Council

Munson named to board

A statewide organization that represents cities before the Washington Legislature recently picked Spokane Valley Councilman Rich Munson as its vice president.

The Association of Washington Cities includes all 281 cities and towns in the state. It lobbies on behalf of cities as a group and offers insurance, research and other services to municipalities.

Munson previously was elected to the AWC board of directors in 2003 and filled a vacancy as secretary in January, according to a Spokane Valley release.

He was elected vice president of the organization at its annual conference in June in Spokane.

In the release, Munson said he intends to represent the city and the Spokane region at large as AWC puts together its legislative agenda.

Tekoa

Trips to Tekoa pool available

South Spokane County towns are again offering a free bus for children headed to the Tekoa pool.

Every Thursday chaperones meet kids at town parks and load them onto a bus that takes them to the pool. Admission there is $1.50.

The bus leaves Rockford at noon, Fairfield at 12:15 p.m., Waverly at 12:30 and Latah at 1 . Children begin the trip back at 4.

The program runs through Aug. 10.

Registration forms for the program are available at each town hall.
