Our View: Citizens should be involved in police chief selection
Monday will be first chance for citizens to question the four candidates for police chief in Spokane.
By then, The Spokesman-Review will have printed in-depth profiles of each candidate. Those four articles, plus the resumes for each candidate are available at spokesmanreview.com.
We encourage people to get involved in the process of hiring for this very important job. The following public forums have been scheduled:
•Monday, 4 p.m.: A reception at Chase Gallery in Spokane City Hall.
•Monday, 7 p.m.: Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook.
•Tuesday, 6 p.m.: Spokane City Council Chambers, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.
•Wednesday, 1:30 p.m.: Southside Senior Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave.
The following are some suggested questions:
What is the best system for police oversight? What are your budgetary priorities? How would you improve the system for reporting crimes? Should more property crimes be investigated? If so, where would you get the resources? What are your thoughts on community policing? What’s your position on public-records requests and sharing information with citizens? How would you ensure that all segments of society get fair treatment?
If you cannot make the sessions, you can always convey your thoughts to City Hall.
The important thing is to get involved.
