Valley Electric will face VEBA in championship
Valley Electric (Mountain View) and VEBA (Evergreen) will play next week for the Spokane Valley Baseball Giants championship.
The unbeaten Mountain View team (13-0) defeated Autocraft 23-5 in one playoff game on Tuesday. VEBA beat Jim Frazier Pro Shop 8-5 in the other semifinal.
Valley Electric’s Jesse Perry went 5-for-5 with two doubles and Blake Bollman was 4-for-6 with a triple while driving in six runs.
Alec Baker went 3-for-4 and doubled, while Keith Babington was 2-for-2.
Title game is Tuesday, 6 p.m. at Mountain View.
Midget League semifinals are set, also for 6 on Tuesday. Banner Fuel (Pasadena Park) will host Spokane Valley Shrine (Otis Orchards) and Valley Instant Printing (Trentwood) entertains Randall and Hurley (Ponderosa).
In first-round loser out competition, Randall and Hurley improved to 9-4 with a 7-1 victory over Leo’s Photography.
Carson Schlect hit a two-run homer, Luca Capobianchi doubled in a pair of runs and Trevor Mitchem had two doubles to drive in two more.
Schlecht teamed with Brandon Anderson in pitching the win.
The other victor, Spokane Valley Shrine, topped Conley’s Place 6-4.
Finals of the Midget tourney will be Thursday.
Among regular season ending highlights: top-seeded Banner Fuel finished 11-1 with victory over Spokane Valley Shrine, 19-3. Hunter and Harrison Wells were a combined 5-for-6, each doubled and scored twice. Hunter drove in four runs and Harrison drove in three. Brandon Davis pitched three no-hit shutout innings and struck out seven.
Valley Instant Printing won 29-11, with Matthew Stewart hitting two home runs, including a grand slam. Scott Taylor had two hits, including a double, to drive in three runs.
Dillon Waybright was two-for-two and stole home twice in Conley’s 11-10 win.
Three of four Pee Wee League semifinalists come from the American Division. Unbeaten A-L Compressed Gases (McDonald), Commercial Lending Northwest (Greenacres) and White Elephant (Summit) all won first-round games.
Regular season champion Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s Association (Sunrise) is the National Division representative.
A-L Compressed Gases (13-0) plays White Elephant Monday at University Elementary. Commercial Lending and the Deputy Sheriff’s (both with two losses) meet at South Pines. Both games are 6 p.m.
The Sunrise team won 19-1 over ICA Associates. The Greenacres squad whipped Gibson’s Nursery 23-6 with Jake Love striking out all nine batters during his three-inning sting. Jacobe Conant went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in. Preston Lantzer was 2-for-2 and drove in three.
A-L Compressed Gases rallied for a 9-5 win over George Velis DDS.
The McDonald squad scored five runs in the fourth for the lead, Ponderosa tied in the fifth, but a four-run bottom of the frame won it.
Alec Iris drove in three runs with a single, and Steven Pesch hit a two-run homer.
End-of-regular season highlights: Trent Ferster‘s clutch outfield catch saved three runs in A-L’s 5-0 victory over Commercial Lending NW for the American Division title. Trace Hussey, who pitched no-hit ball, and Angelo Gonzalez combined for 12 strikeouts in the shutout.
Tucker Foote and Justin Hombel, at the bottom of the batting order, had key RBI singles.
Austin Stannard was 7-for-7 with two doubles and a grand-slam home run for Gibson’s Nursery in two end-of-season wins. Tyler Bates hit two home runs among three hits in one of the victories.
J.T. Straka hit a three-run triple and Khalil Williams a two-run homer as Tom’s Barber Shop won for the first time in its season finale.
Legion playoffs continue
The playoffs carry on for the AAA Spokane Valley Cannons and AA Kimmel Athletic in American Legion baseball.
But the season is over for the Bandits and Spokane Athletic Supply (Central Valley).
The Cannons won 12-3 over the Pullman Patriots, a seven-run second inning the damage-doer.
Greg Bradley had four hits, two of them doubles, and Ryan Maynes three, including a double and triple to advance against the North Stars on Friday in the double-elimination tournament.
The Bandits were eliminated 13-1 by the Patriots, who scored 11 runs in the final three innings of the nine inning game, three in the seventh and eight in the ninth.
Adam Smith had two of the Bandits’ four hits, including a double.
Kimmel Athletic, from University, made short work of its series against Whitman County, outscoring its foe 43-1 in two wins.
Spokane Athletic, following its series opening win over Garco Construction, lost twice to the Gonzaga Prep team, 7-5 and 4-3, to end its season.
U-Hi team advanced to districts with a 25-1 series clincher, banging out 29 hits. Ben Borgman had five hits, Jake Olsufka four, three batters had three hits and four others had two.
District play began Friday and continues through the weekend to determine two State AA qualifiers.
One upsmanship?
For two weeks, Liberty Lake Women’s 18-Hole Club golfers are playing a tournament in which the idea is to better their net scores.
Teams consist of one player each from the A, B, C and D flights.
First-week leaders were two teams with net 58 that both included Cathy Ramm. She was the “blind draw” fourth player along with Kathy Brown, Honey Conlon and Idell Jenicek, and on the tying team that included Jeanne Allemand, Leslie Dunbar and Frances Martin.
Tied at 60 were Caryn McComas, Elsa Metting, Judy Stroup and Maggie Steffy, along with Patsy Lynn, Carol Schultz, Marie Nelson and Sue Meyer.
Sandy Mooney, Debbie West, Jean Fulks and Myrna Neubauer netted 64. Currently at 67 are Jean Hatcher, Connie Hatfield, Jan Hussey and blind draw partner Nelson.
Rowley rolls on
For the third straight week, Marcia Rowley recorded low-gross score during the Trailhead Ladies Golf Club outing.
Rowley shot 46 during most recent competition during a round that included a chip-in.
Patty Haskins shot 50 and also had a chip-in to win Flight B. Wilma Capaul shot 60 in C, and Bev Sloan had 62 in the no-handicap flight.
Net winners were Deanna Hansen with 29 in A flight, Joy Russell, who had the third chip-in on the day, netted 34 in B, and Caroline Michielli had net 28 in C.
