Ballots swell from late filings

Names on Washington’s primary ballots multiplied rapidly Friday as the deadline for candidates to file for office approached.

In Spokane County, several races that looked like one party or the other would be without a candidate filled up, and in one case, created a contest in the primary.

Spokane attorney Bob Caruso and Kootenai County Deputy Prosecutor Jim Reierson both filed as Democrats for Spokane County prosecutor, a position held by Republican Steve Tucker, who is seeking re-election.

As expected, Spokane Valley Police Chief Cal Walker filed in the Republican primary against Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich. Democrat James Flavel of Spokane also entered the race.

And Democrat Skip Chilberg filed for his old job of county treasurer against Republican Bob Wrigley.

The U.S. Senate race – likely to boil down to a contest in November between incumbent Democrat Maria Cantwell and Republican Mike McGavick – grew to include a total of seven Republicans and five Democrats with several last-day filings. There will also be a Libertarian, Green Party and an Independent on the general election ballot.
