Dance fun today, Sunday at Summerama

Steve Christilaw The Spokesman-Review

Like most things in life, it’s difficult to square dance solo.

For those who love Western dance, be it square or round, you need to find a partner.

The Hits ‘n’ Misses Singles Square Dance Club started a summer dance festival to fill that need 26 years ago.

The event, Summerama, is still going strong. It takes place this weekend at the Western Dance Center, 1901 N. Sullivan Road.

“It’s sponsored by the singles group, but these days it’s pretty much for everybody,” explained Sharon McGlenn, the event chair. “We get a lot of local couples, and we even get couples in from out of town.

“That’s the fun of square dancing: You meet some great people. It’s good exercise, and it’s a nice social event.”

As usual for special events, dancing tonight and Sunday will be coordinated by out-of-town talent. The round dance cuer comes all the way from Portland. Square dancing will be handled by two callers from Olympia.

“It’s a little unusual to have two guys calling at the same time, but these guys are friends, and they just decided to work together,” McGlenn said. “They even do some calls as a duet.”

Today’s dancing comes in two sessions from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and from 9 to 11:30 p.m.

“Sunday we have what we call a Trails Out Dance,” McGlenn said. “That goes from 10 a.m. until noon, and then everyone goes out and hits the trail home.”
