Track athletes finish well at state
What South Side state track qualifiers lacked in quantity, they made up for in quality.
Cameron Elisara, the seasonlong premier shot putter in Washington, didn’t disappoint in his final performance at the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington 4A state meet in Pasco.
Elisara put the shot 63-4 1/2 for the Titans, and Ferris, whose Anthony Zackery was a three-event placer, finished eighth with 25 points.
In 3A, Cheney’s Bob Wilske in the shot put, with a 61-foot toss, and Tyreil Poosri both brought home state titles for the eighth-place Blackhawks.
Poosri ran 38.81 in the 300 hurdles after placing fourth in the 110 high hurdles despite a career best 14.85.
“It’s a little redemption for the 110s,” said Poosri of his title. “My coach and I put in a lot of time all season. I feel like we deserve it.”
Wilske was not without his disappointments, failing to place in two other throwing events, the javelin, where he ranked second in state, and discus, where he had the fourth-best throw.
He was angry, he said, after scratching on all three discus throws on Friday and hit 60-feet early in the shot the next day. But he fell behind while high jumping, where he tied for sixth.
When he returned, he uncorked his best put to win by an inch.
“He was celebrating, and I wanted that to be me,” said Wilske. “I warmed up good and figured today was the day.”
Kelly McNamee‘s 5-5 high jump and tie for second place led the Ferris girls.
At the State B meet at Eastern Washington University, Liberty’s Shawn Hennessey placed in two horizontal jumps, including 33-0 third place in the triple.
