The Spokesman-Review

West Valley School District will hold its fourth annual Community Appreciation Block Party from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Pasadena Park Elementary and the Outdoor Learning Center, 8508 E. Upriver Drive.

Everyone is invited to enjoy a free spaghetti dinner, complete with salad, corn, beverages and cookies, all donated by West Valley businesses.

Six bicycles, tickets for Spokane Chiefs hockey games, gift certificates for summer camps and other prizes will be given to bingo game winners.

The event includes activities for children such as a jump castle, dunk tank, mini basketball and soccer games, a speed gun to clock baseball pitching and more.

Student art will be on display, and music will be provided by student entertainers.

It’s also an opportunity to visit the district’s Outdoor Living Center and see live owl and hawk shows.

ID theft suspect summons police

A woman suspected of identity theft apparently got tired of running from the law, so when a deputy noticed her Wednesday she waved him over.

Vicki D. Nance, 44, told the officer she was the one he was looking for, police said.

“She’d gone to one of the last places where she thought she could hide,” said Spokane Valley Sgt. Dave Martin. “They turned her away,” saying that her presence would draw too much police attention.

Her encounter with the Spokane Valley officer occurred about 5 p.m. Wednesday while she was walking near the intersection of Rich and Adams.

Nance is suspected of running an identity theft ring in which nearly 1,000 people have been victimized, Martin said.

She was arrested Wednesday on federal warrants in connection with identity theft and mail theft. Investigators searched 2403 N. Perry St. Thursday afternoon to look for additional evidence against Nance, Martin said.

Detectives began searching for Nance in April after she unsuccessfully tried to cash a $1,000 check at a Wal-Mart.

The investigation led to a motel room in Spokane Valley, across from the Police Department, last month. Detectives searched the room and said they found Social Security cards, fingerprint cards, credit cards, birth certificates, store receipts, stolen and counterfeit checks, computer equipment used to make checks, original and counterfeit driver’s licenses.

Lakotah F. Rangel, 25, was arrested at the motel, but Nance wasn’t there. Detectives followed tips to two other locations, narrowly missing her, before catching up with her on Wednesday.
