Washington, Gonzaga rowers have strong day

Washington’s freshman 8 and open 4 boats each won gold medals, and the Huskies finished third in the team standings at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championships on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

The Huskies finished with a total of 193 team points, two behind Harvard and three behind California.

The freshman 8 covered the 2,000-meter course in 5 minutes, 38.80 seconds, over a second ahead of second-place Cal (5:39.98).

The open 4 finished in 6:26.95, over 2 seconds ahead of Cal (6:29.58).

Cal won the varsity 8 race, finishing in 5:37.71, nearly 2 seconds in front of second-place Princeton (5:39.66). Washington was fifth, finishing in 5:42.44.

“Gonzaga’s varsity 4 finished fourth in the grand final at the IRA championships. The Bulldogs finished in a time of 6:35.63. Stanford won the event in 6:21.42.

The Bulldogs also took fourth in the freshman 8 third final, finishing in 6:08.62. Navy won the event in 6:01.69.

Golf

Washington’s men shot a 13-over 301 in the final round of the NCAA Championships at Sunriver, Ore., leaving the Huskies, who had led after the second and third days, ninth with a total score of 6-over 1,158.

Oklahoma State finished with a 9-under 1,143 to win the team title.

UW’s James Lepp, the defending NCAA champion, finished tied for eighth, shooting a 2-over 74 and finishing with a 3-under 285 overall. Oklahoma State’s Jonathan Moore won the individual title at 12-under 276.

Huskies junior Alex Prugh, a Ferris High School graduate, shot a 2-over 74 to finish 1-under 287, good for 15th place.

Baseball

Lewis-Clark State’s Allen Balmer (Lewiston High) was named the MVP of the 50th NAIA World Series.

Balmer hit .414 in the tournament won by LCSC for the 14th time.

LCSC second baseman Justin Fuller was also honored, winning the Charlie Hustle Award.
