Astros 1, Cubs 0: At Houston, Chris Sampson tossed seven innings of three-hit ball in his first major league start, leading the Astros over Chicago.

Marlins 8, Giants 1: At San Francisco, Dan Uggla homered twice and drove in five runs and Florida avoided a three-game sweep with a victory over the Giants.

Rockies 16, Pirates 9: At Denver, Yorvit Torrealba hit a grand slam and had one of Colorado’s major league record-tying five sacrifice flies in the Rockies’ win over Pittsburgh.

Phillies 7, Diamondbacks 3: At Phoenix, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Sal Fasano homered to lead Philadelphia over Arizona, completing a three-game sweep.

Nationals 5, Braves 2: At Atlanta, Marlon Anderson hit a two-run homer and Ramon Ortiz won his fifth straight start as Washington beat the Braves.

Reds 7, Cardinals 4: At St. Louis, Rich Aurilia matched career highs with four hits and five RBIs, leading Cincinnati to a victory over the Cardinals that pulled it into a tie for first place in the Central.

Padres 6, Brewers 5: At Milwaukee, Adrian Gonzalez and Vinny Castilla hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning to lift San Diego over the Brewers.

Mets 9, Dodgers 7: At Los Angeles, Tom Glavine became baseball’s first nine-game winner and New York beat the Dodgers.
