Spokane Valley Baseball under way

Another season of Spokane Valley Baseball for players ages 14 and under began this past week.

In the Giants League (ages 13 and 14) Valley Electric from Mountain View Middle School got off to a 2-0 start with 11-1 and 16-5 victories over Autocraft and Grocery Outlet.

Joey Lawrence pitched seven innings during the week, striking out 15. Jesse Perry was 5-for-6 with a home run and drove in seven runs. Alec Baker went 4-for-5 with a double in the two games, while Blake Bowman went 3-for-3 against Grocery Outlet.

Three teams were perfect during the first week of Midget League (ages 11-12) play. Randall & Hurley Inc. from Ponderosa, Spokane Valley Shrine Club from Otis Orchards and Banner Fuel from Pasadena Park all got off to 2-0 starts.

Banner Fuel brothers Hunter and Harrison Wells helped spark a 14-4 win by going a combined 4-for-4 with a double each. Harrison drove in four runs and Hunter scored three times. Carson Driskill struck out nine batters in three innings of no-hit baseball.

An 18-run first inning took care of the second win. Hunter pitched two no-hit innings and struck out five. Driskill and Brandon Davis were a combined 4-for-4 driving in five runs. Each hit a triple and Davis added a double.

Randall and Hurley won a pair of one-run decisions behind the pitching of Brandon Anderson and Carson Schlect. The pair combined for 31 strikeouts in 12 innings of the 5-4 and 2-1 wins.

Schlect also homered, while Joshua Nelson and Trevor Mitchen each doubled.

In the Pee Wee League (ages 9-10), half of the eight American Division teams went unbeaten, while three were perfect in the National Division.

A-L Compressed Gases from McDonald won 9-2 and 6-0. Four different pitchers combined for 35 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in the victories. Angelo Gonzales and Kyle Bush had nine strikeouts each, Bush also hitting a double and single and scoring twice in the opening win.

Trace Hussey had eight strikeouts and Trent Ferster nine in game two and Shawn Standish had two hits, including a double.

Gonzales tripled and homered during the week and Ferster also tripled.

Joining them atop the American Division was Commercial Lending Northwest from Greenacres, with 40-2 and 5-2 wins. Jake Love and J.D. Boden were 4-for-4 each in the first win. Love hit two grand slam home runs and 10 runs batted in. Boden also hit a grand slam and finished with eight RBIs.

Love pitched no-hit baseball, striking out eight in Commercial Lending’s second win. Lyle Swenson and Colton Peha had two hits apiece, Swenson driving in a pair.

Also unbeaten in the American Division are White Elephant, from Summit and ICA Associates from University.

In another lop-sided game, Mark Spear Homeselling won 35-0 en route to a perfect National Division start. The Otis Orchards team also won 4-1. Garrett Newbill struck out 15 in two games and didn’t allow a run. Darlan Walker hit a three-run double and Dylan Swannack doubled in two runs during the week.

Brandon Stalker struck out eight in three one-hit shutout innings for George Velis DDS in one of the Ponderosa team’s two wins. Kristofer Jordan doubled in two runs.

Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s Assoc. from Sunrise also won twice, including 15-2 as Alec Grebe and Tyler Pichette combined for 12 strikeouts.

Tom’s Barber Shop’s Khalil Williams was perfect at bat despite two losses. Included were a home run, triple and double.

Painted Hills improves

Attendance and scores are improving with each passing week during Painted Hills Ladies League golf competition.

Last week Arlene Koth shot 49 to win A flight low gross honors and Darlene Hurliman netted 35. June Hathaway shot 54 in B flight where Jean Jones had net 35.

In C flight the winner was Jill Rasler with a 55 while Bev Younglund netted 34. And in D flight Candy Blackmer shot 64 with Lynn Landford netting 33.

Lisa Peart had 51 to win no-handicap competition. Stacey Heaton had a birdie on the fourth hole and Nancy Moore chipped in on No. 7.

Trailhead medal play

Trailhead Ladies Golf Club competitors competed weekly medal play with Carolyn State turning in low gross score.

State shot 49 to win A flight competition. Wilma Capaul shot 57 in B flight, Peg Nadvornick had 67 in C and Cheri Milsap shot 55 to win no-handicap.

Net leaders were Dee Elder with 30 in A flight, Mary Anne Evans with 31 in B and Caroline Michielli with 55 in C. Harriet Carbon had a chip-in.
