SEATTLE – Seattle’s Intiman Theatre, which has premiered such plays as “Nickel and Dimed” and “The Light in the Piazza,” won the Regional Theatre Tony Award for its history of artistic achievement and contribution to drama nationally.

The award, announced Sunday during the 60th annual Tony Awards ceremony in New York, was presented in May.

The Intiman’s artistic director, Bartlett Sher, was nominated for best direction for the Broadway revival of “Awake and Sing!” but lost out to Nicholas Hytner, who directed “The History Boys,” which won six Tonys.

In naming Intiman, the American Theatre Critics Association cited the premieres of “Nickel and Dimed,” an adaptation of Barbara Ehrenreich’s nonfiction bestseller about her attempts to make ends meet while working low-end jobs; “The Kentucky Cycle,” which was nominated for three Tonys in 1994; and the romantic, Italian-set musical “The Light in the Piazza.”
