Mariners sign top pick
SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners have signed Brandon Morrow, their first pick and the fifth overall selection in this month’s major league draft.
“Obviously we are very pleased to get Brandon signed,” Bob Fontaine, the team’s vice president of scouting, said Friday.
The 21-year-old right-hander from the University of California has a 99 mph fastball.
Morrow received a $2.4 million signing bonus just 10 days after the Mariners drafted him, one of the quickest deals for a top pick in recent Seattle history.
Morrow will report to Seattle’s spring training facility in Peoria, Ariz.
