But is your house happy?

Knight Ridder Tribune

Most home inspectors deal with concrete stuff — including, sometimes, concrete. They tap pipes, examine shingles and measure the slope of driveways.

Faith Ranoli does that — and a little more. For her, “energy” isn’t about how many electrical sockets are in the living room. It’s the psychic vibe a house gives off — electromagnetic currents, subatomic particles and the thought waves from previous owners. It’s all about whether the home is “happy” — and how to make it happier.

“(This job) is not so much about the money,” Ranoli said. “It’s more about healing the planet one house at a time.”

Ranoli calls herself a “holistic home inspector.” She combines mold inspections with metaphysics. Most of her clients are homebuyers: Not all ask Ranoli to gauge the psychic health of their would-be home, but if they ask, she’s happy to help.

The Littleton, Colo., resident inspects homes across Colorado. She became a holistic home inspector in the late 1980s, when she was trying to help a friend “release” the spirit of the friend’s mother from the house.

The mother apparently didn’t want to leave.

“Some stuff started happening,” Ranoli said. “Some weird stuff.”

A picture of the mother — a picture that would typically be set on fire during the releasing ceremony — wouldn’t burn. Ranoli’s friend momentarily spoke in her mother’s voice, as if possessed. The home turned “cold and noisy,” and the house began to rumble.

“We all ran for the door,” Ranoli said.

Eventually, after another, more intense “clearing” ceremony, Ranoli says the spirit of the mother departed.

Ranoli says that she can see ghosts and sense the presence of memories in a house. She uses measuring devices to help her find the house’s electromagnetic fields.

All these things help determine the personality and temperament of a house.

Ranoli says her work is based on science and natural law. Artificial electromagnetic fields can change the feel and health of a house. So can leylines, part of what Ranoli characterizes as a natural worldwide energy grid. Psychic flotsam can build up.

Such homes require a clearing, said Ranoli. Clearing ceremonies — sometimes done with alcohol and Epsom salts, sometimes by burning pieces of white leaf sage — sweep away psychic residue.

But homebuyers don’t necessarily want to get rid of all those psychic impressions. Some may help the home be more welcoming and inviting.
