Copper dome shines above Holy Trinity
One of Spokane’s landmark churches is about to get a shiny new copper halo.
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., has been under construction for the past month to replace a 15-year old roof that was beginning to show its age.
The church was built in 1948 and congregants had been discussing a copper-shingled roof since the 1950s, so they decided to put a copper capper on its dome.
“It looks really nice,” Father Stephen Supica said of the changes.
The roof is expected to oxidize after some exposure to the elements and will most likely match the caps on the church’s towers.
“It will get that same green patina,” said Supica.
With all of the noise associated with construction, Supica is grateful the hammering hasn’t interrupted services.
“They take Sundays off at least,” he joked.
The cost of the new roof will be about $160,000. The church is relying on donations to cover the cost.
But Supica’s hope is that the church won’t have to worry about a new roof for generations. “It lasts practically forever,” said Supica.
Until then, the church is still taking donations for its new cupola.
The roof of the red and yellow striped church is expected to be completed about Aug. 1.
“I’m just kind of astounded at how fast this is moving along,” he said.
