Football standouts will play in all-star games
The Spokane Valley will be well represented during Washington All-Star football games the next two Saturdays.
Small-school players kick things off in Yakima this weekend and Freeman’s state quarterfinalist will be represented by Andrew Wilkerson. His coach at Freeman, Jim Wood, will assist.
On July 1 in Everett, all four Greater Spokane League Valley teams will have players in the 4A/3A game.
Wilkerson, who capped his Scotties career with a second State 1A discus track and field championship at the end of May, was the Northeast A League football MVP last fall.
A two-way first-team all-leaguer, he gained 900 yards as a receiver, rusher and return player. In a state playoff loss to eventual state champion Royal, Wilkerson’s 64-yard pass reception set up Freeman’s first score.
He’ll be one of the 2A/1A/B East players counted on Saturday when they face their West counterparts at 1 p.m. in Eisenhower High’s Zaepfel Stadium.
A week later, two Central Valley athletes and one each from East Valley, University and West Valley will play in the large school game at Everett Memorial Stadium, also at 1 p.m.
Three are Division I signees, including Bear lineman C.E. Kaiser, who signed with the University of Oregon, Knight tight end-defensive lineman Tyler Jolley, ticketed for Eastern Washington University, and Eagles tight end-defensive lineman Tyler Hobbs, headed to the University of Montana.
Joining them are CV running back-kicker Zach Evans and U-Hi tight end Clint Moquist.
All five were first team All-GSL selections; Kaiser, Evans and Moquist on offense, Jolley and Hobbs on defense.
Jolley was also unbeaten state 275-pound wrestling champion and a shot put and discus placer for EV’s state championship track team.
Hobbs, All-GSL first team in basketball, led the league in scoring at 18.8 points per game and WV to two state 3A trophies as well as starring in football.
Evans rushed for 1,056 yards during CV’s playoff season and was fourth among GSL scoring leaders. Moquist had 27 catches for 285 yards and two touchdowns for the Titans, fourth among GSL receivers.
Bandits gain ground
First place American Legion AAA baseball team Bandits, with players from University High, opened ground last week on the rest of the field.
The Bandits were 7-2 in league prior to Wednesday’s game against the North Stars and had a four-game lead over the field.
There was a virtual four-way tie for second place among the remainder of the teams after last week’s competition, including the Spokane Valley Cannons (5-6).
The Bandits pulled away by sweeping the Cannons 6-0 and 9-0 and beating the Blue Devils 3-1.
Travis Lewis had a pair of hits in game one against the Cannons and Adam Smith and Dan Jordan combined on the second-game shutout.
On Monday against the Blue Devils, Jordan closed out the win in the seventh. He and Smith had two of the team’s four hits.
The Cannons bounced back with victory over the Blue Devils on Monday, 10-4. Mitch Phillips had a double and triple among three hits and Ryan Maynes had two hits including a home run.
Kimmel still perfect
Kimmel Athletic (University) remained unbeaten in AA Legion baseball play heading into tonight’s game with West Valley.
The team is 9-0 and leads Gonzaga Prep by two games in the South Division after an 8-0 shutout over Medical Lake, doubleheader sweep of East Valley and 11-0 win over WV.
Tyler Olson pitched a pair of shutout victories during the week. With seventh-inning help from Cameron Cook, U-Hi allowed just three hits against Medical Lake and he threw a two-hitter to beat WV.
He had four hits in the two wins, including one of Kimmel’s three doubles against Medical Lake and a home run against WV.
Travis Clark had five hits to lead a 24-hit outburst during 12-8 and 7-2 wins over EV. Kyle Barker, Jacob Olsufka and Craig Keeton all had three-hit games, Keeton with two doubles in the opener.
Cook pitched a two-hitter for Kimmel in the game two win.
EV’s Jeff Bittner and Kyle Lane had three hits each in the first game. Bittner had four hits total, including a double.
Spokane Athletic Supply (Central Valley) is 6-4 after a busy week. SAS swept Ferris, winning 6-1 behind the pitching of Rusty Shellhorn and 4-3 four days later by rallying from a 3-0 sixth-inning deficit.
The team also beat Lewis and Clark 4-3 and West Valley 8-3 before losing 15-5 to Gonzaga.
Zach Malone and Cameron Miner hit safely in all five games, Miner with two doubles, and Trevor Nearing had three two-hit outings.
West Valley went 2-2 in a pair of doubleheaders last week. The team was swept by second-place Gonzaga, but on Monday swept Pullman 10-2 and 4-3.
Andy Vennum had nine hits in five games, including three doubles, while D.J. Mackie had hits in four.
