When Shannon and Louis Flores moved to Spokane in 2004, they had a big idea. That notion was to restore the 1899 Browne’s Addition Queen Anne style home of early Spokane Mayor Edward Louis Powell and turn it into a showplace bed and breakfast.

Now, well into the transformation, the pair have replaced the roof, removing 105-year-old cedar shingles in the process, replaced original cast iron pipes and outdated knob and post wiring, and added insulation.

The 5,000-square-foot house will be featured tonight at 6:30 p.m. on Home and Garden Television’s “If Walls Could Talk.” The program profiles historic homes across the country and showcases artifacts uncovered in them. Louis Flores says they have found a number of interesting items as they renovated their home. “We found old children’s toys, shoes and some of the original light fixtures,” he says. “We even found an 1899 quarter.”

A photograph of Mayor Powell’s wife Dora, as well as one of her calling cards, was also discovered.

After the renovation, when the four suites are open to visitors, the couple will live on the third floor.

“We like to entertain, and we’ve planned this to appeal to guests who want a luxurious experience,” Flores says.
