Search continues for missing woman

The Spokesman-Review

Spokane detectives continued investigating the disappearance of 19-year-old Jamie Lynn Drake on Wednesday.

A detective was in Maple Valley to retrieve Drake’s 1993 silver Mustang, which was found Tuesday night along with the suspected car thief, 20-year-old Kevin Newland, who was arrested.

Drake’s mother, Sue Nichols, said Wednesday: “I’m relieved he’s under arrest. I’m glad they found the car but sad they haven’t found Jamie. But I’m confident that detectives will do what they need to get the answers.”

Detectives plan to bring the car back to Spokane today, said Spokane County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan.

Newland, 20, was being held in a King County detention center on a charge of possession of stolen property.

Newland is expected to be returned to Spokane County “in the near future,” Reagan said.

Most city facilities will close Tuesday

In observance of July Fourth, Spokane City Hall will be closed on Tuesday, along with other city facilities, including the garbage transfer stations and the waste-to-energy plant.

Spokane Public Library branches will also be closed, but the city’s golf courses and swimming pools will be open, according to a city press release.

Parking meters will not be in operation on Independence Day, and garbage pickup and curbside recycling will be delayed for a day.

The Spokane City Council’s briefing session and legislative meeting scheduled for July 3 have been canceled because of lack of a quorum, according to a city spokeswoman.

The council will meet on Monday, July 10, at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. at 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

City officials also noted that fireworks are illegal within city limits.

The fine for each infraction is $513. Residents can turn in unwanted fireworks at any city fire station.

Car wash will raise funds for field trips

Homeless children from Anna Ogden Hall will hold a car wash on Friday to raise money for summer activities.

The car wash, located in the parking lot of the Classy Rack thrift store at 11921 E. Sprague Ave., will be held from 1 to 4 p.m.

The children’s goal is to raise enough money to pay for summer field trips.

They will be assisted by Spokane’s 2006 Lilac Princess Court.
