Downs, Bellevue Christian down Brewster again

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Jeffrey Downs scored 20 points and Bellevue Christian fended off a late Brewster rally to repeat as boys State 1A champs with a 60-56 win Saturday night at the SunDome in Yakima.

Top-ranked Brewster (24-2) trailed by as many as 15 late in the third quarter, but whittled the lead to three with 44 seconds left. BC (24-2) made three free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory.

Brewster had won 24 consecutive games since opening the season with a 62-58 loss to BC. BC beat Brewster 59-54 in overtime to win the 2005 title.

State 3A boys

Spencer Hawes had 15 points and nine rebounds while leading Seattle Prep (26-3) to its second championship with a 47-37 win over rival O’Dea (24-7) at the Tacoma Dome.

Nicholas Fearn sealed the game with a steal and layup and a 43-37 lead in the final minute.

The two split the regular season series. Seattle Prep’s second state title – the other came in 2000 – thwarted O’Dea’s quest for a third straight state title.

State 3A girls

Regina Rogers scored 19 points, including a key layup in the final minute, and Chief Sealth (29-0) held off Issaquah 44-43 at the Tacoma Dome to win its second consecutive state title.

The Eagles (23-6), who lost to Chief Sealth 53-50 last week, blew an eight-point fourth-quarter lead.
