Man accidentally shoots self

The Spokesman-Review

A man appears to have accidentally shot himself to death while showing his handgun to friends, police said Sunday.

Witnesses said six friends were gathered at 508 E. Fairview about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when Luke W. Macarthur got out the gun, Spokane Police Cpl. Tom Lee said in a news release.

Macarthur’s wife said her husband, 24, was trying to unload the gun when it fired, striking him in the head. The Macarthurs live at the home, Lee said. Alcohol appears to have been a factor, Lee said.

Police believe the shooting was accidental but detectives are continuing to investigate, Lee said.

Man dies of shotgun wound

A young man was shot and killed Saturday evening in Oakesdale, Wash., the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Sunday.

Two other juveniles were spending the night with the victim when one apparently shot him in the chest with a .410-gauge shotgun, the Sheriff’s Office said. The victim died at the scene.

The two juveniles were interviewed and released to the custody of their parents, the Sheriff’s Office said. The name of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin, deputies said, and the names of the juveniles were withheld because of their age.

A preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was accidental, deputies said, but the Sheriff’s Office, along with the Oakesdale Police Department and the Whitman County Coroner’s Office, are continuing the investigation.

Man arrested in stabbing

A suspect was arrested Sunday afternoon in connection with a Saturday night stabbing on North Division Street.

Samuel J. Sanchez, 27, was booked on a first-degree assault charge, Spokane Police Cpl. Tom Lee said in a news release Sunday. Sanchez lives near Deer Park, Lee said.

The victim, Marco A. Orozco, was southbound on Division near Lyons Avenue at 11:15 p.m. Saturday when an SUV swerved toward him, witnesses told police.

Witnesses said Orozco, 20, and the other driver argued, and both got out of their vehicles and fought twice while heading south, Lee said in a news release.

The first fight was at Central and Division, and the second was at Wellesley and Division, where Orozco was stabbed in the neck with a knife, Lee said.

Relatives drove Orozco to a hospital, where he was in serious condition Sunday, Lee said.

On Sunday, officers walked a half-mile section of Division Street and found a knife they believe was used in the assault, Lee said.

Witnesses told police that many cars passed when the two men were fighting, and police are asking anyone who saw what happened to call (509) 242-TIPS.
