THE COLLECTOR
Dear Collector,
I’m looking for a reference to this FDR clock that was in my mother’s house forever; I’d love to know if it has any value?
A United Clock Co. product, this timepiece portraying Roosevelt as the “Man at the Helm” was employed in promoting his 1936 presidential campaign. Made of copper-colored white metal (an alloy of inexpensive base compounds sometimes called pot metal) your clock is not a rarity and has a current value of $150 tops.
Dear Collector,
Could you please tell me the value of a 1942 Look Magazine?
A mint-state mag may make it as much as $20.
Dear Collector,
I bought this white-and-blue pitcher at a yard sale last year for $20. On the bottom it says “Medina” and JF& Co.” Unfortunately, it has an old repair where its spout was broken off at one time. How old is it, and how much is it worth?
Jacob Furnival, a Staffordshire potter, established his Stoke-on-Trent factory in 1845. Operating for just 25 years, Furnival made practical ironstone wares in various scenic patterns bearing exotic names. Your pitcher, due to its damaged circumstance, is not worth much more than what you paid.
Dear Collector,
What can you tell me about artist Georges Haquette?
Born in Paris in 1854, Haquette belonged to the “French Realists,” a school of artists dedicated to accurate and truthful depictions of the everyday world. He favored seascapes and marine scenes, posing people on the ocean’s shore. Haquette exhibited frequently, mostly in French salons, before his death in 1906. Today, his oil paintings have auctioned for as much as $5,000.
Dear Collector,
Will you please give me an approximate value of Indian Head pennies?
I will, if you tell me their condition, mint marks and dates.
Dear Collector,
I inherited a 10 gauge lever action Winchester Model 1901 rifle and have not been able to locate any information or ballpark value on it; please help.
Having made their mark with lever action rifles, Winchester decided to apply that system to their line of shotguns, though they also produced a pump action, which is now the industry standard. According to the serial number you provided, your firearm was manufactured in 1902. Current value for an example in poor condition is $250, while a near mint model goes for more than $1,000.
Dear Collector,
Enclosed are photos of a #2 Brownie Kodak camera. Can you tell me its estimated value?
Made for decades, this simple box camera is worth very little unless it is one of the blue or red versions, which are now valued at almost $100.
