Wireless etiquette: Stay connected, politely
They’re everywhere – wireless devices have become a common sight at the airport, the grocery store, on the bus, at the movies, in the office, or even at a family function –people have eagerly embraced the technology that allows them to remain connected to people and information throughout the day.
However, those who are newest to the technology are often the most unclear on its proper etiquette. If you are unsure how to use a wireless device, you may want to keep the following tips handy:
Do:
•Keep your wireless device on vibrate or quiet when you’re in a meeting.
•Put down your device when you want to show others that they have your undivided attention.
•Wait to respond to emails that aren’t time sensitive until you are done with your meeting/conversation.
•Respond to urgent inquiries quickly and quietly while in situations that require your attention.
•Maintain a 10-foot distance from others while talking on the phone.
Don’t:
• Send personal email or take personal calls during business meetings.
• Check your wireless device while someone is speaking directly to you.
• Check your device in places where others might find it disrespectful – e.g. during an important dinner function, at a wedding, during a doctor’s appointment, etc.
•Use the phone in public places such as trains, buses, etc. Many wireless devices allow you to email or text message instead of placing a phone call in confined public places for more discreet communication.
•Check your device and/or respond to email while driving.
By keeping these tips handy you’ll find that the rules of engagement for wireless communications just got easier.
