Art to be added to parks chapter of comprehensive plan
The Spokane Valley City Council Tuesday added art to the list of things it wants to promote in the parks and recreation chapter of its forming comprehensive plan.
Goals added to the chapter would encourage the creation of public art in Spokane Valley, with council members citing the Spokane Valley Heritage Museum and the Spokane Valley Arts Council.
Over the last few years, the museum had developed exhibits in what was once the Opportunity Town Hall and will host a traveling Smithsonian exhibit later this month.
Recently the art council has worked with the city to display the work of local artists at the city’s CenterPlace community center.
Councilman Rich Munson specified that it would be the private sector and not the city that would fund art.
Others on the council also said the chapter’s new goals would encourage the arts rather than require the city to provide for them.
A public hearing on the entire comprehensive plan will be held at 6 p.m. today at City Hall.
