Class for sprouting gardeners

Perhaps you’ve always envied the plump, juicy tomatoes your neighbor harvests each year or maybe you just want to figure out how to maintain a stunning flower bed. Whatever the question, you’ll find answers at a new class for beginning gardeners offered by the Master Gardeners and the WSU Extension office.

The first of four weekly classes is from 10 a.m. to noon today at the Extension Education Center, 222 N. Havana St. Additional classes are set for April 15 and 22 and May 6. The cost of the series is $30 per person or family; children over the age of 10 are encouraged to attend. Call 477-2048 for more information. Remember, the mark of a successful gardener isn’t necessarily a green thumb. It’s the dirt under your fingernails.

C’mon down to ‘Grease’

It’s been a while since John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John shimmied across the movie screen to the beat of “Greased Lightning” in the film “Grease.” If the mention of the toe-tapping movie has you reaching for your video rental card, stop right there. Check out a live version instead and drop in on a performance of “Grease” being staged by the students at East Valley High School.

The final performance of the musical is scheduled tonight at 7 at the Trent Auditorium, 3303 N. Pines Road. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children ages 6 to 13.

It will be facet-nating

The name of the 47th annual Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show pretty much says it all. You’ll see everything from highly polished rock specimens to the kinds of rocks that sit on engagement rings at this weekend’s show at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center.

The show is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5. If you want in for a free peek, show up at the gate in a scout or Camp Fire uniform, though 40-year-old former Scouts might want to skip trying to fit into an old uniform meant for a 12-year-old.
