History not on GU’s side

Here’s some good news and bad news about the Zags.

The good news is Adam Morrison is the current NCAA Division I scoring leader.

The bad news is you have to go back to 1960 to find the last college to have a scoring champ and a Final Four appearance in the same season.

That was Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati beating out Jerry West. The third-place finisher was GU’s Frank Burgess, who would lead the nation the next season.

Does this mean we should count the Zags out? Let’s not get hasty yet. This No. 4 school in the country earned its rankings with some hard-fought wins against some big schools.

This Gonzaga team may not be the best we’ve ever had, but with two marquee players and an improving supporting cast, it may have the opportunity to scale some heights hitherto unattainable by a small school from Spokane.
