The Big East, which expanded to 16 teams before this season, sent an unprecedented eight teams to the NCAA tournament.

The previous record for most teams from one conference in the NCAA tournament was seven: The Big East did it in 1991, and the Big Ten did it in 1990, 1994, 1999 and 2001.
