LC pair stand out on their links play

Success in any team sport can usually be traced to strong leadership.

At Lewis and Clark High School, winning in girls golf begins with All Greater Spokane League performers Molly Fuhs and Allison Moran.

The Tigers, who have won the GSL title the past two seasons and finished in the top five at state last year, are hoping the two seniors once again will hem to the top of the league.

“They’ve kind of taken the initiative to lead and get to know the freshmen,” said new head coach Michelle Grafos.

“Some of them haven’t played golf. They’ve been great at asking questions, getting a feel for what they want out of their golf game and what they want out of the season.

“We’re all on the same page. We want to win.”

Each player hopes to not only improve her own game, but that as well for their teammates.

“I think we’ve been really supportive of all the other girls, so they’ve got an equally good shot at making the state tournament,” said Moran, who went to the state tourney with Fuhs last season.

“Besides trying to shoot pretty low, I want to be more concerned about presenting myself in a good manner and always being excited, being ready for the tournaments, urging everyone on, and congratulating them for doing well,” said Fuhs.

“You want to be there for them when they have tough days. As an individual, you want to stay positive and strive to do your best.

“Being a leader is setting an example for everyone to follow.”

For Grafos, who played at Washington and toured as a pro, coming over from West Valley High School to Lewis and Clark has allowed her to see the talent of the two up close.

“I didn’t get a chance to watch them last year, but I was really curious to see what I was going to get this year,” Grafos said. “I’m thoroughly impressed with their golf game and what kind of great people they are as well.

“Molly is a great ball striker, and her short game is really good, too. I’ve seen some great shots out of her iron game as well.

“Allison is an overall athlete. Her short game is really good. I’ve seen some really good shots from Allison, some really good putts.

“I want them to have a really awesome experience for their senior year, and by that, I mean have lots of fun and repeat as GSL champions.”
