Enjoy the run

The fans, pundits, and others who are consumed with critiquing the Gonzaga University basketball team and their chances for a successful run in the “Sweet Sixteen” are missing the point.

They’re so focused on analyzing the team’s performance that they’re overlooking the qualities that have made this program the envy of the country.

While it’s important for society to temper its adoration of sports heroes and teams, the success of Gonzaga’s basketball program has been a wonderful tonic for our community. Moreover, the program’s rise to national prominence came at a time in our local history when “good news” was desperately needed.

Unless we’re in the business of college athletics, I don’t know if any of us realizes what it takes to maintain a program at this level.

Gonzaga basketball has given this community a very special gift, the gift of pride and confidence. Let’s enjoy!
