GU played right

The Spokesman-Review

Grantland Rice, an American sportswriter who lived from 1880-1954 wrote, “For when the One Great Scorer comes, / To write against your name, / He marks – not that you won or lost – / But how you played the Game.”

And how Gonzaga played the game! Even in their loss to UCLA, it was a commendable effort. The Gonzaga basketball team has exemplified dignity in both winning and losing. As a student at GU in the ‘60s I saw Frank Burgess lead the nation in scoring and now as a grandmother, I have enjoyed watching Adam Morrison attain the national scoring crown. The excitement and team spirit the Zags have brought to our community is something to celebrate and enjoy.

Mark Few and his coaches have trained a diverse group of young men to work as team, share the glory, inspire our youth, and bring enjoyment to all the fans. As great as our disappointment is that the Zags lost, let us not forget that they have put the Spokane area in the national spotlight and have displayed to the world that our community produces great sportsmen and is united behind its young people whether they win or lose.

Thank you Zags, for a wonderful season!
