Block grants available for downtown projects

The Downtown Neighborhood Steering Committee is distributing $39,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds to downtown rental housing projects serving low-income residents.

Priority will be given to capital projects involving health and safety issues, enhanced accessibility and increased energy efficiency.

Operating expenses, developer fees, appliances and cosmetic improvements are ineligible. Federal restrictions apply.

All work must be completed by Dec. 31. The minimum request is $10,000. Completed applications are due to the city of Spokane’s Community Development office by 4 p.m. April 28.

Concert and book sale

Friends of the Deer Park Library will hold a mini-book sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the meeting room at the Deer Park Library, 208 S. Forest Ave.

The sale features new and used items. Proceeds from the book sale will go to enhance library programs, materials and activities.

Harpist Bronn Journey will perform from 3 to 4 p.m. at the library. Admission is free. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Deer Park Library. The concert is underwritten by the Margaret Irving Special Program Fund.

Meetings

•The Whitman Neighborhood Council meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Whitman Elementary School, 5400 N. Helena St.

Neva-Wood COPS meets at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday at 4705 N. Addison. Refreshments provided. Parking across the street to the east at the Zion Church.
