Get out, Get going

There’s a plethora of birds in our corner of the Northwest and it can be difficult to identify a specific bird – except, of course, the red-breasted robin. Today’s your chance to learn about everything bird at the Bird Festival from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the West Valley Outdoor Learning Center, 8706 E. Upriver Drive.
Come for all or part of the events, which includes bird observations, a scavenger hunt, a raptor presentation and a showing of the film “Pale Male.” There also will be child-friendly activities such as building a bird house and dissecting an owl pellet (if they have the stomach for it). Families are welcome to bring a picnic and make a day of it, but you should probably leave the fried chicken at home.
Senior services
Seniors sometimes struggle in their efforts to stay as independent as possible and remain in their homes as long as they can. Today St. Paschal’s Catholic Church is hosting a free Senior Services and Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be several organizations there that offer support services, such as home delivery of groceries, personal assistant and errand services, and in-home meal delivery from Valley Meals on Wheels.
Other agencies that plan to be there with information include Aging and Long Term Care of Eastern Washington, Spokane Community Care, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. The church is at 2521 N. Park Road.
Boogie all night
The Central Valley High School Band and Jazz Choir deserve an A for effort just for naming their spring fundraiser the Boogie Woogie Bugle Bash. Snack on desserts, dance to jazz tunes and bid on a few auction items to raise money for the teen minstrels from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the school, 821 S. Sullivan Road.
Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door; $5 for students. Call 230-5444 for more information.
