Boy, 17, dies in crash; driver arrested

A 17-year-old Spokane boy died in a single-vehicle crash Saturday night, and the 16-year-old driver has been arrested for vehicular homicide, police said.

Speed and alcohol were a factor in the crash that occurred about 6:36 p.m. at Fourth Avenue and Lincoln Street, said Spokane police Officer Devin Presta.

The crash remains under investigation.

Firefighters who first arrived on the scene found three juveniles outside the upside-down sedan, police said.

In addition to the driver and the youth who died, there was a 16-year-old passenger.

The driver and surviving passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Both juveniles are also from Spokane.

Skid marks extended for nearly a block and showed what the car left in its path: two flattened parking meters, a splintered power pole and a demolished gold Acura. Glass, car parts and street signs were scattered throughout the intersection of Fourth and Lincoln.

The crash closed the intersection for more than three hours, Presta said.
