Workshop, essay contest encourage bicycle safety

The Spokesman-Review

To celebrate National Bike Safety Month, officials are encouraging young people to attend a safety workshop and write an essay as part of the annual Head Smart Campaign.

The workshop will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Pratt Elementary. Children ages 8 to 14 will learn about the rules of the road, bike maintenance and helmet safety. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. To register, call 324-1530.

Also, young people can pick up entry forms at area McDonald’s restaurants to enter a helmet safety essay contest. Two age groups, ages 5 to 9 and ages 10 to 15, will compete to answer why they wear a helmet whenever they ride bikes or other wheeled transport.

The winner will receive a new bike and helmet. Entries must be received by May 26.
