VCS drama production starts next week
A comedy flirting with mistaken identity and true love opens next week, presented by Valley Christian School drama students.
“The Rivals” by William Brinsley Sheridan focuses on the question of who will Lydia Languish choose to love? Will it be her beloved Ensign Beverly or the odious Mr. Acres? The comedy features true love, rivalry, swords, disguises, trickery and lies.
The performance stars seniors Nick Crooks as Captain Absolute and Amy Fox as Lydia Languish.
Performances will be at the University Center, 10212 E. Ninth Ave. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door or $3 in advance by calling 924-9131. Students and seniors are $2.
Woodard Elementary benefit next Saturday
A benefit next Saturday at the West Valley School District offices will offer family fun-filled activities.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can find a rummage sale, car wash, plant sale, carnival, petting zoo and many games at the administration site, 2805 N. Argonne Road. The benefit will support Seth Woodard Elementary.
Otto the mascot from the Spokane Indians Baseball Team will be on hand along with Boomer the mascot from the Spokane Chiefs Hockey Team.
Orchestra, choir concert Wednesday
The New Horizons Orchestra and Choir Spring Concert is scheduled at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Central Valley High School Theatre, 821 S. Sullivan Road.

Area students earn awards at state FBLA
Students from Central Valley and University high schools placed in the Future Business Leaders of America State Business Conference in Seattle, April 13 to 15.
Anthony Kanago, a CV sophomore, took first place in Computer Concepts testing a student’s understanding of the basic principles involved in computer technology.
Alicia Martin, a CV senior, placed fourth in Who’s Who in FBLA. This event honors FBLA members who have made outstanding contributions to the association. Andrea Avenger, junior, and Will Bernbaum, sophomore, placed fifth in Emerging Business Issues at the FBLA state conference. Members develop and demonstrate skills in researching and presenting an emerging business issue.
Josh Tempel and Avenger, Central Valley FBLA’s president and vice president, took first place for the Local Chapter Annual Business Report.
The Central Valley FBLA Chapter also received the Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit that recognizes outstanding local chapters. The chapter also was recognized for having the most creative charitable contribution project with the “Mile of Quarters” fundraiser, for the largest local chapter membership in the Northeast Region, and the largest number of professional members in the region.
Kanago (Computer Concepts) and Avenger (Annual Business Report) have the opportunity to represent Central Valley at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn., in June.
From U-Hi, Carly Jordan, Laine Anderson and Sarah Baxter won first place for Emerging Business Issues. Aaron Bestick took a second for Technology Concepts, and Jamie Funke grabbed third place with Visual Basic Programming.
Ross Thompson, Dale Knudsen and Bestick won a third for Web site Development; Jordan and Baxter won again with a fourth in Business Ethics; and Thompson took fifth in Visual Basic Programming.
First- and second-place U-Hi winners also qualified to compete at the FBLA national event in Nashville.
