CC Spokane softball wins 12th division title
Aimee Fitting (Lakeland High) hit home runs in the second and third innings as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Big Bend (22-15, 16-12) 7-3 to sweep a doubleheader and earn its 12th NWAACC Eastern Region softball championship.
Stephanie Day (Colville) threw a four-hitter to earn her 20th win of the season for the Sasquatch (32-8, 24-4), who tied with Wenatchee Valley (33-10, 24-4) in the league standings but won by virtue of a better record against third-place Walla Walla.
In the opener, Jo Bailey walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth to score Jessica Miles and give CCS an 11-10 win. Amber Fowler (Colville) tied the game for the Sasquatch with her 23rd homer of the season, a three-run blast.
Baseball
Keoni Ruth and Shane Buschini each had three hits to lead host San Diego (31-22, 12-8) to an 11-7 victory over Gonzaga to even a West Coast Conference series.
Ryan Weigand and Dustin Colclough each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs (28-22, 9-11), including back-to-back doubles in a ninth-inning rally to drive in a total of three runs.
•Chris Minaker and Chris Lewis each hit three-run homers in a nine-run second inning as Stanford (26-21, 9-11) routed Washington (32-22, 9-11) 14-6 in a Pac-10 game in Seattle.
•Kyle Greene (Lewiston) hit 2 for 4 with a two-run homer in the first inning as host Walla Walla defeated Community Colleges of Spokane 7-1 to open an NWAACC Eastern Region season-ending doubleheader.
In the nightcap, Chris Bozo (Ferris) was 4 for 5 and Alex Scarpelli (Shadle Park) was 3 for 5 with two doubles to give the Sasquatch (18-26, 13-15) a split with a 7-3 win over the Warriors (29-21, 11-17).
Golf
Washington State’s Anastasia Kostina shot a final-round 72 to finish 24th at the NCAA Division I Women’s West Regional in Auburn, Wash., her 12th straight top-25 finish.
Freshman Amy Eneroth (Mead) shot 76 to finish in a tie for 40th, and the Cougars finished tied for 18th of 21 teams.
Washington’s Paige Mackenzie won medalist honors by eight strokes, and Purdue won the team title.
