Registration open for summer classes
Central Valley has opened registration for summer classes, allowing young people to explore academics, sports or arts. Enrollment is open to all students residing in or outside the CV district.
Classes are set up for elementary, middle and high school students. Academic sessions begin June 26 and run through July 27 or 28. Included are two new WASL seminar courses for high school students who scored at Level 2 on the WASL test.
Nearly two dozen sports camps also are available at University and Central Valley high schools.
Fees for academic courses range from $115 to $160 with some scholarships available. Sport camps typically run one week with fees from $30 to $80. Art camps cost $60 to $120.
Summer School 2006 will be held at four Central Valley schools:
•Elementary program – Project-based “Adventures in Learning” program will focua on reading, writing, math, vocabulary and listening skills. Progress Elementary, 710 N. Progress Road.
•Middle school program – “Project Learning” camp will look at real-world situations to strengthen research, reading, math, technological and communication skills. Greenacres Middle School, 17409 E. Sprague Ave.
•High school program – Credit courses will be offered in English, math, science, social studies and some electives. University High School, 12420 E. 32nd Ave. Classes run in two sessions, 7:30 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
•WASL seminar courses – Credit courses will be offered in math and reading/writing designed to help students who score at level 2 on the high school WASL and are entering grade 11. Two sessions, 7:30 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at U-Hi.
•Sports camps – May 30-July 28 (typically four to five sessions, each lasting about one week) for grades K through 12.
CVHS – will be offering basketball, gymnastics, football, volleyball, weight training, tennis and track at the high school at 821 S. Sullivan Road.
U-Hi – will be offering baseball, basketball, football, softball, volleyball, gymnastics, tennis, soccer and weight training.
•Art Camps: Theater Summer Camp – grades 3 through 12. Learn a wide variety of acting techniques culminating in final performance; offered July 6-20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at CVHS. Beginning Strings – grade 5. Learn to play selected strings instruments; offered June 26-July 27, 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Greenacres Middle School, 17409 E. Sprague Ave. Advanced Strings – grades 6-8. Designed for second- and third-year strings students; offered June 26-July 27, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Greenacres Middle School.
•Spokane Valley Native American Program – June 26-July 27; offered at no cost to Native American students in grades 1 through 8 who live in Central Valley, East Valley, Freeman and West Valley school districts. Held at Progress Elementary, from 8-11:30 a.m. Limited class size. Call 228-4261 to register.
