Flying Fortress flights, tours available
A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, the kind that flew the European skies during World War II, will stop at Felts Field for three days beginning June 2, to offer enthusiasts an aviation history lesson, as well as rides to people who preregister.
It’s a massive four-propeller, 13-machine gun combat plane with gun turrets on its roof, nose, tail, flanks and underbelly. It took a crew of 10 to operate the B-17.
The plane to be displayed at Felts Field Aviation belongs to the national Experimental Aircraft Association. The association’s Spokane affiliate, Chapter 79, will play host.
The Seattle-built bomber has a rich Spokane history, dating back to 1941 when Geiger Field was selected as a training facility for the B-17. The local chapter is looking for members of flight crews who flew the B-17 during World War II.
Flights on the plane can be reserved online at https://secure.eaa.org/B17/securejoin_B17.html. Those interested can also call (800) 359-6217 for a reservation form. Advanced bookings cost $359 for members and $399 for nonmembers. Flights booked on site cost $26 more.
Members of the EAA Warbirds of America who are experienced in World War II airplane operations will fly the airplane, which is painted in the colors of the 398th Bomb Group.
From takeoff to landing, the flights last about 35 minutes.
