Get out, Get going

The Spokesman-Review

Jowl-dropping fun

Check out those lovable, floppy-eared basset hounds at today’s eighth annual Basset Blast at Sullivan Park, 1901 N. Sullivan Road. Bring your dog to register at 11 a.m., the competition begins at noon. The canines will compete in categories such as best howl, best waddle, saddest look, best costume and longest ears.

There will be raffle prizes. The event is sponsored by Washington Basset Rescue. You don’t have to be a basset owner to appreciate the collection of four-legged critters, so drop by for a fun afternoon.

A brief intermission

Parents searching for story times on the Spokane County Library District calendar can stop looking. The district has started its annual hiatus to give the story readers a break, so the weekly story times (or twice weekly at the Spokane Valley Library) will not be offered again until June 12. So until then, encourage your children to curl up with their favorite book (and you).

Giddyup

The fifth annual Ride the West Horse and Ranch Expo is under way at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center. Dig out your cowboy boots and hats (spurs are optional) and check out a full schedule of clinics, demonstrations, exhibits, trade show and more horseflesh than you can shake a stick at.

Hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 per day. Free for children under 9.
