Bengals ride Gibbs’ arm to state title
It was a good time for Collin Gibbs to pitch a gem.
Gibbs threw a complete game, allowing one run on six hits, walking none and striking out 10 as Lewiston won the State 5A baseball title with a 6-1 victory over Twin Falls Saturday at Borah High School.
Gibbs (5-2) needed just 88 pitches to send the Bengals home with the state’s biggest trophy.
Scott Chance and John Rohde each had two-run singles in a four-run second inning for Lewiston (25-3).
Chance ended the tournament 8 for 11.
Softball
Bear Lake was awarded the State 3A title after the tournament was called early because of bad weather.
Bear Lake, which hadn’t lost a game in the tournament, was declared the champion after rain ended play at Ramsey Field in Coeur d’Alene.
Middleton and Kimberly, which were scheduled to play a third-place game with the winner advancing to play Bear Lake, were declared co-runners up, each earning second-place finishes.
Tennis
Lewiston’s Kim Fong got her revenge.
Beaten by Eagle’s Mollie Hunt 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of the championship bracket, Fong blanked Hunt 6-0, 6-0 in the consolation final to take home third place at the State 5A tournament at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club.
In the 5A mixed doubles, Lewiston’s team of Alex Mayton and Jessy Cawley fell in the consolation final 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and finished in fourth place.
In the 3A tournament at Timberline High School, Rayna Allen of Clark Fork beat Cody Curran of Community School 6-0, 6-1 to win the girls state title.
Allen’s performance helped lead Clark Fork to a third-place finish in the team title.
The Bantams tallied 49 points. Community School won the team title with 119 points.
Washington baseball
•State 1A tournament: At Moses Lake, Nate Burgher and Chris Sattler combined to throw a one-hitter as Brewster had little trouble with Colfax, beating the Bulldogs 5-1 in quarterfinal action. Burgher also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs, and Brodie McCormack went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Brewster, which earned a spot in the semifinals Friday in Yakima. … Earlier in the day, Colfax (10-9) scored five times in the third inning off five singles, a walk and an error en route to a 6-4 first-round win over Warden. Kyle Morgan pitched a complete game for Colfax, allowing just two earned runs on five hits while walking none and striking out three. … Also earlier, Brewster got a three-hitter from Michael Taylor en route to a 1-0 win over Columbia-Burbank. … At Wenatchee, Newport (23-0) won a pair of games to earn a spot in the state semifinals Friday in Yakima. In their first-round matchup, the Grizzlies knocked off Cle Elum, and in their quarterfinal game, Newport turned back Okanogan. The Grizzlies will take on Kalama at 7 p.m. Friday at Parker Field.
