Expansion Sky knock off Sting in opener

Jia Perkins made three free throws with 1 second remaining Saturday night, lifting the expansion Chicago Sky to an 83-82 victory over the Charlotte Sting in Charlotte, N.C., in the season opener for both teams.

The Sting scored 18 consecutive points in the game’s final 3 minutes, erasing a 16-point deficit and taking an 82-80 lead on LaToya Bond’s 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds remaining.

Sun 91, Liberty 74: At Uncasville, Conn., Nykesha Sales scored 19 points and matched a career high with 10 rebounds to lead Connecticut past New York.

Monarchs 105, Mercury 78: At Sacramento, Calif., Erin Buescher scored a career-high 18 points to lead defending champion Sacramento over Phoenix.

Fever 67, Shock 60: At Indianapolis, Tamika Catchings had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Indiana past Detroit.
