Lakeside ousted in 2A quarterfinals

An early slugfest didn’t go Lakeside’s way.

Jake Graham had a double and three RBIs, and Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) scored eight runs in the first two innings, but it wasn’t enough as Ephrata scored nine runs in the first two frames and held off the Eagles 11-9 in quarterfinal action of the State 2A tournament at Yakima.

Ephrata scored seven times in the first inning and twice in the second, while Lakeside (15-10) scored six runs in the first and two in the second.

Alex Erickson added a pair of RBIs for the Eagles.

Earlier in the day, Cody Reeves had a pair of hits, including a double, and a pair of RBIs as Lakeside scored twice in the bottom of the third and knocked off Quincy 3-2 for a first-round win. … Also earlier, Ephrata knocked off Archbishop Murphy 4-3.

•State 1A tournament: At Wenatchee, Nick Collison went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs, and threw a complete game, allowing two runs on three hits as Newport (23-0) earned a spot in the semifinals Friday in Yakima by beating Okanogan 10-2 in quarterfinal action. Collison improved to 8-0 on the season. Eric Weidemier added a two-run double for Newport. The Grizzlies will take on Kalama at 7 p.m. at Parker Field. … Earlier in the day, Josh Tiede (10-0) threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits as Newport beat Cle Elum 8-0. Chance Hargrove went 2 for 3, and Weidemier had a two-run double for Newport. … Also earlier in the day, Okanogan knocked off River View. … At Moses Lake, Nate Burgher and Chris Sattler combined to throw a one-hitter as Brewster had little trouble with Colfax, beating the Bulldogs 5-1 in quarterfinal action in Moses Lake. Burgher also went 2 for 3 from the plate with a pair of RBIs, and Brodie McCormack went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Brewster, which earned a spot in the semifinals Friday in Yakima. … Earlier in the day, Colfax (10-9) scored five times in the third inning off five singles, a walk and an error en route to a 6-4 first-round win over Warden. Kyle Morgan threw a complete game for Colfax, allowing just two earned runs on five hits while walking none and striking out three. … Also earlier, Brewster got a three-hitter from Michael Taylor en route to a 1-0 win over Columbia-Burbank.

•State B tournament: At Yakima, Lind-Ritzville (20-3) had little trouble with Liberty Christian, winning 11-3 in quarterfinal action. … Earlier in the day, Nick Ashley went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double, and he picked up the save as Lind-Ritzville knocked off LaSalle 5-2 in first-round action. Zack Gardner went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI for the Broncos. … Also earlier, Liberty Christian beat Orcas Island 12-9. … At Walla Walla, St. George’s (18-5) managed just three hits against seven-time defending state champion DeSales in a 5-0 first-round defeat.

Softball

•District 7 2A playoffs: At Colville, Jordan Emmill (11-0) threw a complete game, allowing one run on four hits and striking out three as Colville (17-0) earned the district’s top seed to state by routing Pullman 11-1 in five innings. Cass Stuart was 2 for 4 with an inside-the-park, two-run homer in the fourth for Colville, and Emilee Lepp hit a three-run home run in the third. The Indians will play Friday in the State 2A tournament. … Caitlin Smith scattered five hits and struck out five as Medical Lake (18-6) the district’s No. 2 seed to state with a 3-0 shutout win over Pullman in a loser-out game. Rachel Maddox was 1 for 3 with an RBI double in the third for the Cardinals, who will play in the State 2A tournament Friday. Pullman finishes the season at 14-10. … Earlier in the day, Maddox went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs as Medical Lake won a loser-out matchup 6-4 over Chewelah (14-9).

•District 7 B playoffs: At Kettle Falls, Kayleigh Fisk singled home Cassandra Strite for the game-winning run in the top of the ninth during an international tiebreaker as Davenport earned the district’s No. 1 seed to state with a 7-6 nine-inning win over Inchelium. Davenport (22-5) also got a two-run single in the third inning. Inchelium (21-2) – which had scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, highlighted by Melissa Dick’s two-run double – is the No. 2 seed to state. … In a state-seeding game, Odessa (24-3) earned the No. 3 seed to state with a 5-1 win over Selkirk (18-7). … Earlier, Sarah Fink was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth, as Odessa knocked off Liberty 7-5 in a loser-out game. Liberty finished the season 19-8. … Freshman Audre Reeve scored on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, and Maria Villegas then stole home as Selkirk scored twice in the top of the eighth to beat Curlew 2-1 in a loser-out game. Curlew finished 18-6.

Idaho

•Baseball: At Nampa, Idaho, Sandpoint, down 6-2, down to its last three outs and down a manager, scored six runs in the top of the seventh to stun heavily-favored Bishop Kelly 8-6 in the State 4A title game. In the top of the sixth, Noah Hawkins and Tyler Lichty led off with singles before a Jake Howell attempted sacrifice bunt appeared to load the bases when the Knights muffed the throw. But the home plate umpire reversed the call, and Sandpoint manager Mike Givens was ejected for arguing. However, the Bulldogs (18-8) rallied. Cory Hawkins started things off with a leadoff single. Knights pitcher Kyle Wuestenfeld then hit two batters to load the bases with no outs for Ricky Klontz, who reached on an infield single, scoring one. Noah Hawkins had another infield single to make it 6-4 and Lichty tied the game with a two-out single, two-run single. Howell then followed with a game-winning two-run double.

•Softball: In the sixth meeting of the season between Coeur d’Alene and Lake City (23-7), it was the Vikings who took home the win and took the State 5A softball title with them. Jenna DeLong threw the complete-game shut out, allowing just five hits while striking out six. Jordan Corbey laced a two-run single in the second, and Jackie Lenz scored on an error in the fifth to account for all of the scoring for Coeur d’Alene (20-6).

•Track and field: Leading by a point heading into the 1,600-meter relay, the State 3A championship’s final event, Timberlake needed to finish ahead of Shelley to ensure a state title. Anchor Nick Puckett did just that, leading the Tigers’ relay team to a quarter-of-a-second advantage over Shelley and thus ensuring Timberlake’s second state title in three years. … Darcy Collins finished her illustrious career with 14 state titles – she won her fourth 300-hurdles title, her third 100-hurdles title and fourth high jump gold – and accounted for 38 of Kootenai’s 75.5 team points as the Warriors won their fifth straight girls State 1A title in Boise.
