LC’s Gullickson, Otto take third
Lewis and Clark is bringing home a pair of tennis trophies.
Ben Gullickson and Elise Otto each won their third-place matches Saturday at the State 4A tennis tournament in Vancouver.
Gullickson, who lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Brad Bator of Inglemoor 6-4, 6-1, beat Bran Valach of Richland in straight sets to earn the third-place trophy.
Ferris’ Whitman Hough won his consolation semifinal over Daniel Lee of Curtis 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the fourth-place match, where he lost to Auburn Riverside’s Alex VanDerschelden 6-4, 6-2. The Saxons sophomore earned the sixth-place trophy.
Otto lost her semifinal to eventual champion Stefanie Doolittle of Olymipa 6-3, 7-6 (4), but the junior recovered to beat Alyssa Ferry of Emerald Ridge in straight sets to earn third place.
Mead doubles partners Britta Stime and Katrina Schwab beat Abby Olbrich and Sarah Click of Skyview 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Megan Havili and Judy Liening of Todd Beamer to take sixth.
In other 4A girls action, Ferris’ Katie Griffith fell to Vaiana Guittet of Redmond 6-4, 6-3 in a loser-out match. … In 4A boys doubles, Nick Johnson and Chris Martin of LC fell to Abraham Allison and Beter-Aron Shimeles of Garfield 6-1, 7-6 (4) in a loser-out match.
•State 2A tournament: At Yakima, Max Nelson of Medical Lake brought home the fourth-place trophy after sweeping Ben Shelton of Vashon 6-4, 6-1. … ML’s Noi Moroni and Dallon Bogart fell to Phil Andersson and Dan Hornung of Klahowya 6-3, 6-2. The Cardinals duo brought home the sixth-place trophy.
•State 1A tournament: At Yakima, Matt Jackson of St. George’s came home with the sixth-place trophy after falling to Overlake’s Bobby Seidensticker 6-3, 6-1. … In boys doubles, Danny Mathews and Andy Nonnenmacher of Freeman earned the fourth-place trophy after winning their match in three sets. … Mallory Mielke of Davenport fell to Christine Leilabadi of Forest Ridge 6-2, 6-3 in girls singles. Mielke finished sixth. … In doubles play, Jamie Larmer and Lauren Stromberger of Sprague-Harrington took home fifth place after falling to Maya Nehru and Alex Boit of Overlake 7-5, 6-0.
