Meet your Neighbor

Carl Gidlund Correspondent

Name: Ben Curtiss

Age: 30

Hometown: I was born in Manhattan but my dad was an investment banker, so I’ve lived in Kenya, Arizona, Chicago and Detroit. Then, in the Air Force, I was stationed in Arizona, Saudi Arabia, Okinawa and Guam. We’ve lived in Wallace for the past 2 1/2 years.

Occupation: I’m a landscape architect. I also teach skiing at Silver Mountain, and I’m an aspiring writer on men’s issues.

Family: Trista and I have been married six years, and we have two children, our daughter, Jaden, 6, and son, Noah, 3.

Hobbies: Downhill and backcountry skiing.

What do you like about North Idaho? Here we really enjoy backpacking on the good trail system. We also don’t feel like we have to keep up with the Joneses here, and I like the fact that my daughter can identify six kinds of animal scat, but doesn’t really know what a mall is like.

What do you like or dislike about the current season? Fall is a perfect season. It’s a relief from the heat, with cool nights and beautiful foliage changes. And we anticipate snow.

Favorite music: Anything by Sarah McLachlan

Favorite TV show: Notre Dame football

Favorite movie: “Apocalypse Now”

Favorite spot in North Idaho? Why? Dominion Peak above the Hiawatha Trail. It’s beautiful there, with great camping and not many people.
