Calls include a dozen structure fire reports

The Spokesman-Review

Firefighters from the Spokane Valley Fire Department went out on a dozen reports of structure fires, two vehicle fires and two brush fires between Oct. 31 and Monday.

One of those destroyed an outbuilding at the 5300 block of North McDonald Road, said department spokesman Bill Clifford.

At 15917 E. Sprague Ave, the sprinkler system at an apartment complex extinguished a fire believed to be caused by a suitcase left on a stove, Clifford said.

One of the brush fires was caused after someone put hot ashes from a fireplace onto combustible material outside, he said.

There were 20 fire alarms, most of them false. Clifford said one of them was caused by an apartment resident burning popcorn.

On Halloween, a 6 year old in the area of Argonne and Knox was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after being hit by a car, Clifford said.

There were a total of 14 vehicle accidents that week, Clifford said. Six people were taken to hospitals and one died after his motorcycle crashed into a pickup at Wellesley and Corrigan Road.

There were 131 medical calls during the week and one hazardous materials call to clean up oil from the motorcycle crash, Clifford said.
