Prep playoffs today

East meets West today when Gonzaga Prep and Colville play host to state high school playoff football games. At stake are berths in state semifinals.

The Bullpups play Eastlake in a 4A quarterfinal on their campus and the Indians are in Albi Stadium against Tumwater in 2A. Both begin at 1 p.m.

Eastlake’s spread offense will pose a dilemma for Greater Spokane League champion Gonzaga Prep, which will counter with its option game.

“The problem is they have two quarterbacks (one who passes, the other who can run) who are both pretty good,” said G-Prep coach Dave Carson. “You have to prepare for both segments and be ready to do whatever it takes.”

Colville will be going up against a wing T attack when it plays Tumwater, which features twins Zach and Matt Johnson, who are getting Division I looks, as is Colville’s John Roberts, primarily for defense.

On offense, Zach has rushed for 1,727 yards and 25 touchdowns. Roberts, the Indians’ single-season record setter, is approaching that with 1,600 yards this year.
